Honey and Capital One Legal Troubles Fuel Rival Extension's Growth

Honey and Capital One Legal Troubles Fuel Rival Extension's Growth

Following the initial lawsuit against Honey, a series of new legal actions were taken against PayPal, the parent company of the Honey extension. One of the key plaintiffs in these lawsuits is GamersNexus, led by Steve Burke, who is known for his tech videos and for calling out companies engaging in unethical business practices against consumers [1]. In addition to covering the case, Steve released a video featuring interviews with various experts on topics like how class action lawsuits operate and the role of cookies in online marketing, alongside explanations of deceptive trade practices [2].

Among the other plaintiffs are content creators such as Shonna Coleman [3] and Lyon Fitness [4], as well as affiliate marketers Eli Silva, Ashley Gardiner [5], Jayne Young [6], and Jose Moran [7], who promotes EnChroma glasses and has been featured by MegaLag in his video [8]. The emergence of these lawsuits shows a clear need for legal action against unethical practices in the industry.

Capital One Also Gets Sued

In addition, Capital One’s browser extension was found to do shady things similar to Honey. Thus, America’s Attorney, LegalEagle, and Attorney Tom filed lawsuits due to this shady behavior [9]. America’s Attorney uploaded a video about the lawsuit on his YouTube channel, which can be watched here. Some of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit include Brian Moses, who runs a tech YouTube channel and Think Media, one of the plaintiffs in the Honey lawsuit filed by the same attorneys. Now, America’s Attorney pointed out that these lawsuits take between three to five years due to technical issues that weigh or slow them down, as well as arguments about class certification and the nature of the claims. Let’s hope these lawsuits will change the creator and consumer landscape since these extensions are undoubtedly helpful, if not for the fact that they are scummy.

Syrup, The New and Honest Coupon Extension

Because of the recent news, Hexium, a full-stack developer and content creator, created a new browser extension called Syrup. As for the name, honey and syrup feel similar in terms of consistency. He showcased the development process of making the browser extension in a YouTube video. I recommend using it to find the best deals when shopping online. You can download the extension on Google Extension Store and Firefox Browser Add-ons.
